When the cause of your symptoms is trauma, whether the trauma is physical or emotional shock or intense pain, the body’s nervous system is pushed to its limit of tolerance and the response is fight/flight, freeze or collapse.
Often these sensations and feelings cannot be processed immediately. It takes time for the nervous system to self-regulate and then regain equilibrium. In the interim, the nervous system blocks energy and memory from the body and mind as a way to protect itself. This can result in the appearance of physical symptoms such as anxiety, depression, chronic pain, or chronic ‘difficult to treat’ maladies. So, sensitivity to the body’s nervous system plays an important part in the deep understanding of symptoms, and is the beginning of integrating traumatic events as with body-centered trauma therapy. Acupuncture is a way of gently restoring energetic harmony by communicating with the body via the nervous system.
